THIS IS MY PLAYLIST

Musician Frazey Ford brings an eclectic and informed mix to the weekly CBC Radio show

CBC Radio’s My Playlist features some of Canada’s best musicians and artists playing DJ for an hour each week presenting music that shaped and inspires them. Recent broadcasts feature hosts like Maestro Fresh Wes, Loreena McKennit, Hannah Georgas, Nelly Furtado and Chilly Gonzales.

A couple of weeks ago I tuned in to Vancouver’s Frazey Ford taking her turn on the show playing an eclectic mix of songs from a range of artists including her first musical crush, Prince.

“The very first record I bought was Prince, Purple Rain,” Ford says.

“And that record definitely changed my entire life. I think I was 11 years old and everything about Prince hit me really hard. His entire career he was such a genius and so innovative. He never stopped changing what he did and how he did it.”

Her 11-song set includes a rousing gospel song from Shirley Caesar, an obscure gem by Canadian 70s folkies Fraser and DeBolt, a reggae tune from Jimmy Cliff and a haunting ballad by her friend Pauline Lamb (aka Violet Wolf).

She reserves two slots for Joni Mitchell: “ I would argue that no one in the world writes better lyrics than Joni Mitchell … including Bob Dylan,” she says.

Ford first made her musical mark as co-founder of the alt-country trio The Be Good Tanyas who released three albums between 2000 and 2006 and continued to perform until around 2012. She has also recorded three solo albums since 2010. Her latest, U Kin B the Sun, was released in February.
In this edition of My Playlist, Frazey Ford brings passion, a keen ear and musical smarts to her commentary and song choices. Click here and give her hosting gig a listen. The broadcast may not be available outside Canada. However, see below for the playlist I put together of the songs featured in it.
