THE 55TH JUNO AWARDS 2026
A diverse crop of 258 newcomers and veterans ensure that Canada’s music award show stays in tune
What keeps Canada’s JUNO Awards interesting is how they mirror our multicultural reality from ocean-to-ocean and the 49th parallel to the Far North. All corners of the country – from student radio stations to urban musical hot spots and everything in between – show up in the nominees list and on the awards stage.
Pop icon Nelly Furtado and the respected Joni Mitchell will both be honoured at this year’s event. Furtado will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame for her songwriting, 35 million album sales plus multiple Juno, Grammy and Latin Grammy trophies. Mitchell will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award and a musical tribute by Sarah McLachlan and Allison Russell presented by the National Music Centre. Other featured artists include Arkells, The Beaches, Daniel Caesar and William Prince. And this year Mae Martin – Canadian comedian, actor, screenwriter, and recording artist – will host for the first time and is also the event’s first non-binary emcee.

Playlist and nominees
This year 248 hopefuls are vying for recognition in JUNO’s 47 categories with 156 of them being first timers including almost everyone in the new Latin Music Recording of the Year list. The awards also feature multiple nominations for First Nation and Inuit artists across five different categories. That means there are a lot of unfamiliar names mixed in with the veterans. Front runners with the most nominations are Justin Bieber and Tate McRae. Included in the Fan Choice category are names like Cameron Whitcomb, Shubh, Josh Ross, James Barker Band and more. Better known are Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd and Karan Aujla.
A few artist profiles
Here’s a brief sample of some of the artists on this year’s JUNO Awards nominee list:
1) MISS EMILY – hailing from Ontario’s Prince Edward County Emily Fennell has been singing soul, blues and R&B since she was 12. Some 30 years on, her consistent work ethic has earned her several Maple Leaf Blues awards and a second JUNO nomination for Best Blues Album of the Year with her latest, The Medicine, produced by Colin Linden. She describes her debut single Stand Together, Band Together as “a soulful singalong that embraces the idea that my struggle is your struggle, your struggle is my struggle and none of us gets through this world alone.”
2) CROWN LANDS – recording since 2016 the Oshawa-based band’s name aims to challenge the Canadian government’s theft of indigenous land. The two-man band of Cody Bowles and Kevin Comeau explore progressive rock and have toured with KISS, Jack White and Greta van Vliet.
“Being a band called ‘Crown Lands,’ we have to talk about what’s actually going on and the fact that Crown Land is stolen land,” says Comeau. “We have to talk about colonization, the ramifications that are still being felt every single day, and the fact that it’s not ancient history.
“It’s ongoing and something we wanted to bring attention to, being in Canada and being a Canadian band,” Bowles adds. Crown Lands is nominated for Instrumental Album of the Year for Ritual II. The band won Breakthrough Group of the Year (2021) and received nominations for Rock Album of the Year in 2021 and 2024.
3) Begonia – known to her parents as Alexa Dirks, the Winnipeg, Manitoba-born singer is a three-time Juno nominee and Polaris Music Prize shortlister. This year she’s vying again for the Adult Alternative Album of the Year prize. Her powerful album Fantasy Life features strong musical arrangements and bold lyrical candour. She’s in high flying company with competitors Patrick Watson, the Weather Station, Bahamas and the Barr Brothers.
She says the new disc features “more risk, more complex vocals, more pop diva mania, more feeling, more truth and more fantasy”. Repeated listening doesn’t disappoint.
“There’s a spirit of freedom to this record that was such a big part of the songwriting sessions I had in L.A. with deadmen (Matt Peters and Matt Schellenberg),” Dirks shared in a release. “I spent a little over a month in total with them writing this record every day and it’s the most RIGHT in songwriting sessions that I’ve ever felt.”
4) PIQSIQ – PIQSIQ’s album, Legends, is nominated for Global Music Album of the Year and is the sister duos seventh recording since getting together in 2019. Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay, sing katajjaq – Inuit throat singing – and lend their voices to an array of Inuit mythologies on this latest project. Their Spotify biography says, “As PIQSIQ, (we) perform improvisational looping live, creating a dynamic audience experience that changes with every show. PIQSIQ incorporates their dark and ethereal style into their recordings… and continue to blend magic with sound to further develop their entrancing style.”
5) Lou-Adriane Cassidy – the talented French-Canadian singer is nominated for her third album Journal d’un Loup-Garou (Diary of a Werewolf) as Francophone Album of the Year which was also on the 2025 Polaris Prize long list. At age 28 Cassidy is a veteran performer having started singing at 16 appearing on various Quebecois talent shows. The disc is a concept album – a rarity in music today – which she describes as a theatrical “high-flying spectacle”. The album has a bold progressive rock sound which is a departure from her first two albums which featured more typical French “chansons”.
6) Josh Ross – from Waterdown, Ontario Ross became the first Canadian man in 30 years to top the US Country Music charts last year with the hit Later Tonight from his most recent album of the same name. The smooth-voiced Nashville resident was quick to follow up his previous disc, Complicated which won the 2025 JUNO for Country Album of the Year. In an interview with Beatroute online magazine to mark the Number 1 hit he said: “… I can honestly say that every song I’ve released is either my own story or something that’s happened to me or is really close to me. Songs like Single Again were actual moments of me telling a girl to let me know if she’s ever single again. Songs like First Taste of Gone, which was the first song that felt like it did something for me back in 2022, was about a girl moving on in my life at the time. I really try to pull from real life.”
Give today’s playlist a listen and stay tuned for JUNO Awards Part 2 next week. There’ll be another playlist and different artists on deck.
