50 categories and 200 performers

The JUNO Awards show takes place at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena Sunday, March 30. It airs at 5PM PDT and 8 PM EDT on CBC-TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music and CBC Listen and globally at CBCMusic.ca/junos and CBC Music’s YouTube page.
THE JUNO 2025 AWARDS PREVIEW
“Oh Canada” is at the top of our hearts
The brimming patriotism that’s gone viral across Canada in the past two months will get another gentle boost next week when the country’s top musicians gather in Vancouver to celebrate our talented music industry. More than 200 performing acts in about 50 JUNO Award categories are vying for trophies in everything from Song of the Year to Best Album Artwork.
Canadian music icon Anne Murray will be awarded a lifetime achievement award and the affable Burnaby-born crooner Michael Bublé will be hosting the event. Two artists who’ve had breakout years –Calgary’s Tate McRae and Waterdown, Ontario-born Josh Ross – are tied for most nominations at five. Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd each have four.
What makes the JUNO Awards interesting?
In a word: diversity. The nominated artists are drawn from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and represent numerous musical genres. Canada has made much of its “multicultural” society. However, it has taken us a long time to integrate and accept that reality. And, by the way, we’re still working on it.
It wasn’t until 1990 that the RCMP accepted turban-wearing sikhs into its ranks. And only in recent years – since 2021– has our public broadcaster CBC turned its attention to ensuring gender and ethnic diversity in its on air and managerial ranks. The JUNO Awards are on a similiar arc. That said, the diversity is rather amazing when you review the array of amazing musicians honoured with a JUNO nomination.
Partial playlist and featured artists
The big fun in scouring the JUNO Award list of nominees is discovering excellent new music. Of the almost 60 performers on today’s playlist, more than 40 are new to me. The 60-song playlist sampler is a relatively subjective selection drawn from the list of nominees and hundreds of possible compositions. At the same time, it aims to sample and reflect mainstream radio and streaming sources including country, hip hop and rock while including jazz, adult contemporary, global sounds and more.
There are categories not represented in the playlist that are on the JUNO list. These include metal, rap, electronica and dance. A playlist sampling these genres will be featured in Kurated next week.
A few of the artists
Almost all the artists have just one entry in the playlist. You’ll hear international stars The Weeknd, Kaytranada, Mother Mother and Shawn Mendes. Well known performers on the Canadian airwaves include Leif Vollebekk, Kaia Kater, Charlotte Day Wilson, Terra Lightfoot, Donovan Woods, Elisapie and Abigail Lapell. Lesser known but also vying for our attention are Maïa Davies, Loony, Sukha, Nemahsis and Boy Golden. Some of the names from the jazz community include Laila Biali, Larnell Lewis, Shruti Ramani from Vancouver’s Raagaverse and Andrea Superstein.

Palestinian-Canadian singer Nemahsis is nominated in three categories – Breakthrough Artist of Group of the Year, Alternative Album of the Year – for her second album Verbathim – and Songwriter of the Year. (Norman Wong photo)
Check out these 9 musicians
1) Andrea Superstein – it’s been a good year so far for the Vancouver-based self described genre-bending, quirky, indie, jazzy singer-songwriter. In February she was JUNO-nominated for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year and just after that short-listed as one of three jazz finalists in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest founded in 1997 by Yoko Ono. The chosen song, Mombo is on her third album, Oh Mother, in which the versatile artist explores motherhood in various manifestations. In his review for The Whole Note, Raul da Gama writes, “Superstein’s introspective vocal exhortations are boosted by inspirational instrumentation that lift the songs into a higher realm. Best of all these are honest sounds of love, joy, and serenity – all of which are de rigueur the province of a woman who has made a life in which art and parenthood are aglow with success and pride.”
2) LOONY is an idiosyncratic and beautifully soulful R&B singer from Scarborough, ON. In her news release for her self-titled album she wrote, “My friends say I’m spacey as hell, I’m often in my own little world.” No matter, however, since that world is coloured with personal, introspective lyrics set to excellent melodies issued in her mellifluous voice. Also know as Kira Huszar, her EP soft thing was long-listed for the 2022 Polaris Prize. Her album Loony is up for Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year and was also longlisted for 2024’s Polaris Prize.
3) Maïa Davies‘ song Fuck You I Don’t Forgive You is beautifully forthright and aimed at a tone deaf ex. Melodically gorgeous and lyrically assured it’s one of my favourite songs on today’s playlist. It’s from her third album Lovers’ Gothic which, surprisingly, is up for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year – the category doesn’t usually flirt with such edgy song titles or material. Hailing from Montreal, the singer-songwriter had a lengthy stint with Ladies of the Canyon before going solo in 2012 with her album Héritage followed by Plus que vive in 2018. Along the way she co-wrote songs with artists like Jill Barber, Mother Mother and Serena Ryder. The superb Lovers’ Gothic is her first album sung in English.
4) Shruti Ramani – known for her agile and precise vocals, jazz singer and composer Ramani earned a Bachelor’s degree in Hindustani music in her native Mumbai, India. After moving to Canada she got a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies at Capilano University. Based in Vancouver she’s the leader of Raagaverse a four person group which also includes well known bass player Jodi Proznick. The band’s debut album, Jaya is up for Jazz Album of the Year (Group).
5) Eric Bearclaw is the stage name of Eric Barraclough, a compelling guitarist who hails from Cedar, BC just south of Nanaimo. He’s nominated for his second album, Distant Places, in the category Instrumental Album of the Year. His inspiration comes from his world travels to destinations like Madagascar, Lebanon, Egypt, Sierra Leone and the music he’s heard there.
“I like that dark, Middle Eastern oud-sound … the fretless guitars,” he says, as well as having a fondness for Central and South American influences, along with hip-hop
6) Sukha – is a young, Toronto-based Punjabi singer who’s garnered 2.6 million monthly followers (mostly Indian) on Spotify since launching his debut track Siftaan in 2022. At age 20, his debut EP Undisputed is nominated for Album of the Year and the singer is up for Breakthrough Artist or Group of the Year. Sukhman Sodi is his full name; Sukha translates as “happiness” in Punjabi.
7) Djely Tapa – the Montreal-based singer is back at the JUNOs nominated for another Global Music Album of the Year award which she first won in 2020. She proudly says, “I’m heading for the future with African heritage”. Descending from a long line of Malian griots, Tapa is from West Africa’s Mandinka region and has been hailed as one of the new global voices of its music .

Toronto’s Larnell Lewis – drummer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and teacher
8) Larnell Lewis is an alumnus from Toronto’s Humber College and a part-time instructor at his alma mater. But the Toronto-born musician is also a renowned drummer and multi-instrumentalist best known for his ongoing work with US jazz fusion American band Snarky Puppy. He has played with many prominent jazz luminaries, producers and players. Among them Quincy Jones, Michael Brecker, Laila Biali, Molly Johnson, Elizabeth Shepherd and others.
9) Boy Golden – takes his performing handle from Winnipeg’s Golden Boy, a bronze statue modeled after the Roman God of Mercury that stands atop the provincial legislature. Any resemblance, however, between the artist – known to his parents as Liam Duncan – and the statue is purely coincidental. Though I’ve heard his name this is my first rodeo with the refreshing candour and casual musical demeanor he exhibits on For Eden nominated for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Manitoba Music describes it best: “Introspective and vulnerable, traditional and queer, hard-headed and sensual, Boy Golden’s everyman-aesthetic can appeal to all of us. This ability lies in his songwriting: the songs your friends tell you about, the stories you hear from your neighbours, your community. He’s comfortable both in the spotlight and just outside it, sharing the moments with other artists, lifting others up along with him.”
