BIDDING ADIEU IN SONG

We all end. And when we do, it’s marked in various ways. In recent years my family has gathered for memorial services. We bring together close ones and share some words, photos and music.

And so we did again last month. My five Belgian cousins and I are at the top of the generational heap with our parents gone. It was unexpected that the youngest of us would be the first to leave. My cousin, Geertje Vochten, died of pancreatic cancer just four months after being diagnosed. She was a lively and determined 64 year-old with every hope and intention of living as long as all our elders had.

I was asked to suggest some songs for her memorial. Together with my eldest cousin Jan, we arrived at the 11 pieces on today’s Kurated playlist. It’s a poignant and beautiful bunch which speaks to a time of life many of us are experiencing.
