SONG OF THE DAY: SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT

Robert Glasper offers two versions of the Nirvana grunge classic

Smells Like Teen Spirit’s chart success in 1991 marked grunge music’s mainstream breakthrough while vaulting Nirvana into worldwide recognition.

It was a short run. Three years after the song was recorded the band’s lead songwriter and singer, Kurt Cobain, took his life.

Jazz pianist Robert Glasper has covered the song numerous times since it appeared on 2012’s Grammy Award-winning album, Black Radio. The first version on the playlist is an acoustic piano and stand-up bass piece for One Mic One Take. The second version features a contemporary R&B approach.

Kurated is a music sharing project.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

By Nirvana

Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over-bored and self-assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us

A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey
I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now…
