GRAMMY AWARDS 2025
In its 96 award categories are hundreds of hopefuls with a wealth of musical talent and genius
There’s almost 500 nominations among the Grammy Awards 96-category list. It ranges broadly from Album of the Year to Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media and includes hundreds of music industry hopefuls. However, when it comes time for the overblown, almost four-hour TV presentation, only a handful of acts actually perform. And chances are the ones anyone remembers are the stars – Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar or Jon Batiste to name a few.
Last weekend’s broadcast was fairly typical. The twist was that the show was part-telethon fundraiser to help rebuild the giant swaths of Los Angeles razed to the ground by January’s wildfires. As a result host Trevor Noah found himself pitching for donations instead of sharing his usual patter of humourous quips.

Nominated in four categories, Chappell Roan won her first Grammy for Best New Artist.
What makes the Grammy Awards interesting
As a music observer two things make the Grammy Awards worthwhile – first, for better and worse, it offers a snapshot of mainstream culture. But more important, in that list of nominated hopefuls, there’s an amazing wealth of musical talent and genius crossing genres and geographies sharing all kinds of stories and insight. As Leo Tolstoy said: “Music is the shorthand of emotion.”
Featured artists
The 35-song playlist sampler in today’s post features first time winners and nominees, surprising legacy acts and a crop of all star artists who’ve been dominating the charts and streaming channels for the past few years. The Rolling Stones and The Beatles lead the legacy contingent with both winning a trophy last week. Veterans like T Bone Burnett, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings make an appearance alongside Norah Jones, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. Kacey Musgraves, Billie Eilish and Meshell Ndegeocello have songs on the list too.

Nigeria’s Burna Boy
Check out these musicians
It’s the lesser known (to me) artists that caught my attention. Some are new and others have been at work for a few years. They include:
• Arooj Aftab (Raat Ki Rani)– the Brooklyn-based Pakistani-American singer was the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy for her song Mohabbat in 2022. This year she garnered two nominations for her fourth album, the moving and beautifully played Night Reign. Aftab has collaborated with artists like Anoushka Shankar whose 2023 album she produced.
• Four Tet (Loved) – Electronic musician Kieran Hebden has been working under the name Four Tet since his first solo recording in the late ’90s. This year he was nominated three times for a Grammy – twice for work on 2024’s album Three and another for a song he produced for Brit wunderkind Fred again… . AllMusic’s Paul Simpson called Hebden “perhaps the definitive indie electronic artist”. He praised the artist for his “experimental yet highly accessible recordings, which blend organic and electronic sounds, have earned widespread acclaim from critics and fans of electronic music as well as indie rock.”
• Sierra Ferrell (Lighthouse)– recording since 2018 the American folk/bluegrass singer has been gathering momentum in the past three years culminating in a four-trophy win for her album Trail of Flowers at last week’s Grammy presentation. In 2023 she told American Songwriter, “I noticed at a very young age,” I could express a delivery of an emotion and make other people feel that way. Honestly, I got addicted to it, this little power that I had. People would laugh or cry or get upset over a story. I wanted to harness that. I don’t come from much, so this became my superpower. Later on, I found out that it was called ‘entertaining.’”
• säje (Alma feat. Regina Carter) – is a jazz-vocal supergroup comprising US singers Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick and Erin Bentlage. The band members had active careers before getting together in 2019. They won their second Grammy in two years last week for the song Alma for Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals. It was the same category they were nominated for in 2020 for their debut single Desert Song. Their second nomination was a winner for the category in 2024 – In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning.
• Burna Boy (Higher) – some call him the giant of Nigerian music. Recording since 2013, it’s about time I got to know this artist. Writing in the New York Times, critic Jon Parales says: “Burna Boy has not diluted his African heritage to reach his global audience. Instead he has placed an unmistakably African stamp on music drawn from all around Africa. A voice that exemplifies the West African cultural virtue of coolness, poise and control.”
• Charli XCX (Apple) – known to her parents as Charlotte Emma Aitchison, the UK-born daughter of Scottish and Ugandan heritage started recording at age 16 in 2008. She famously championed Democrat presidential contender Kamala Harris, proclaiming “Kamala IS Brat”. Brat is the title of her 2024 album which won three Grammy Awards last Sunday. Charlie XCX explains the term as “that girl who is a little messy and likes to party … Who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown … is very honest, very blunt, a little bit volatile”. The singer-songwriter experiences sound-to-colour synaesthesia which means she see music in colour. “I love music that’s black, pink, purple or red – but I hate music that’s green, yellow or brown.”
• Teddy Swims (Lose Control)– the soulful Atlanta-based singer has had a breakout year with his debut album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1). He was Grammy-nominated for Best New Artist. He reveals: “… there’s a deep-seated fear within me when it comes to considering therapy. Maybe it’s because I’m afraid of getting answers to questions I didn’t even want. That’s why this album, for me, is my first step into trying to accept that some things are out of my control and that I can openly talk about my insecurities and hopefully be candid about my issues.”
• Yemi Alade (Tomorrow) – singer, songwriter, actress and activist, Yemi Alade is a highly regarded and inspirational Nigerian singer. Her music is a mixture of Afropop, highlife, dancehall, pop and R&B. Her latest album is Rebel Queen. She says: “Honestly, I’ve always seen music as a weapon. It is a weapon whether people like it or not. And that is why I’m very careful with how I use it. On the album, I have decided to use it as a weapon of love, a weapon of peace, joy, happiness, a weapon of reawakenedness, a weapon of motivation. You know, not all weapons need to be fashioned to destroy.”
• Tems (Love Me JeJe) – the Nigerian singer was inspired by Yemi Alade and, despite a degree in economics and a career in digital marketing, quit her job to self-produce her first single, Mr. Rebel, in 2018. By 2021 she was starting to collect awards for her recordings and songwriting. She won her first Grammy in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap. This year Love Me Jeje earned a trophy for Best African Music Performance.
