CBC TV’s 90-minute Sunday night special supporting front-line workers in Canada’s COVID-19 battle featured a lot of energized Canadian talent and star power.
But 79 year-old Buffy Sainte-Marie shone brightest with the fire and wisdom of her lifelong activism informing an inspired 68 second spoken word poem. Based on her 2015 song, Carry It On, the renowned singer-songwriter exhorted the audience to “Hold your head up, lift the top of your mind, put your eyes on the earth, lift your heart to your own home planet.”
A fundraiser for Food Banks Canada, the show featured famous Canadians from the music, sports, space, political and performing arts worlds. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered a brief recorded speech just before hip-hop star Drake closed the show with an untypically flat, long-winded sermon.
An all-star, physically distanced Canadian choir – including Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan –recorded in numerous separate locations performed Lean On Me by the late Bill Withers.
