The Loneliest Time is a streaming smash
Mission, BC’s Call-Me-Maybe hit making pop icon Carly Rae Jepsen teams up with Canadian music royalty’s Rufus Wainwright to deliver a pop perfect disco gem – The Loneliest Time – title track from Jepsen’s sixth album. The woman has a decade-long knack for crafting radio and streaming friendly earworms. This one, released on October 7, garnered 11 million original Tik Tok streams and appears in 90 thousand other Tik Toks and counting by the end of last month.
This frothy and upbeat tune falls firmly in the musical guilty pleasure zone. IMO, any song in this category is simply beyond reproach.
The CBC Radio listeners among you have probably heard the bouncing and infectious melody. Local and a variety of national programs are in love with it. Ironically, the two Canadian singers are permanent residents of Los Angeles.
Jepsen’s affecting soprano and Wainwright’s lilting tenor are a perfect blend on the four-minute-plus piece which features 5-part ensemble strings.
The album’s theme is loneliness. Says Jepsen in a news release: “It can be really beautiful when you turn it over and look at it. Just like love, it can cause some extreme human reactions.”
Pitchfork writer Olivia Horn delves a bit deeper in her album review: “Jepsen seems more interested in earmarking ideas than in formulating an overarching aesthetic proposition. In the spaces between these experiments, she’s in familiar form, dropping rapturous lyrics into fizzy synth songs like sugar cubes into champagne. The Loneliest Time isn’t the introduction of a new era—a marketing concept that demands artists reinvent themselves every few years (particularly if they are women who have aged out of the term “ingénue”). It’s just a new album. And it’s just fine.”
