JUNOS WITH AN EDGE
The awards include rap, electronica, EDM, big beat and more
The JUNO Awards launched modestly in 1971 with 15 basic categories including Top Canadian Content Company of the Year and Broadcaster of the Year.
How things have changed.
Now in its 54th year, the event has 60 categories reflecting a world decades removed from an obsolete ethnocentric gaze. We embrace musics and cultures that speak many languages both in word and sound. We are far more open to diversity whether it’s ethnic or gender-based. One outcome is the birth of an enormous number of creative musical subgenres sparked by identity and culture shifts, technological advances and globalization. We reside in a very layered and rich sonic environment.
Today’s 19-song JUNO playlist features some outside-the-mainstream nominees from this year’s JUNO list – work most of us are unlikely to hear via our usual channels. This is relatively unknown musical ground for me (though I’m a big fan of big beats so those are well represented).
Late night dance floor enthusiasts will know some of these groups and compositions. Others of you may want to turn your ear toward some new and foreign sounds.

BC’s Snotty Nose Res Kids are nominated for three JUNOs this year – Rap Single of the Year, Rap Album of the Year/EP and Contemporary Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year. They have three previous nominations and are looking for their first win.

Vancouver’s emo-pop group Ekkstacy is nominated for Best New Artist of the Year.
