Gorgeous and strong, it’s the lead single from Lido Pimienta’s new album, Miss Columbia, set for release next month

Outspoken activist and Latinx musician Lido Pimienta’s resume has many and varied entries. Among them are visual artist, queer, Afro-Colombian-Canadian,  single mother, curator and Polaris Music Prize winner.

Angry and defiant also apply. In accepting the award for her album, La Papessa, at the Polaris Awards Gala in 2017, Pimienta famously called out the organization for the unacceptably poor sound quality during her event performance.

But she typically targets larger issues like race discrimination and sexism. During her Polaris acceptance speech she said, “I hope that the Aryan specimen who told me to go back to my own country two weeks after I arrived in London, Ontario, Canada is watching this.” She also thanked her mother for enduring years of white supremacy in Canada.

Her music is sung entirely in Spanish and bears Latin American influences, IDM, and electropop.

The Miss Columbia album was financed by Toronto-based Pimiente’s $50,000 Polaris Prize win.
