A DEEPER LOVE: ARETHA FRANKLIN/REMIX BY TINUSH – STRUGGLE

Aretha Franklin recorded dance hit A Deeper Love in 1993 covering the 1991 original written and performed by Robert Clivillés and David Cole. The duo later adopted the C+C Music Factory moniker, becoming famous for club hits like Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).

Covering the song was a change of pace for the Queen of Soul. It became a dance floor favourite showing that – 30 years into her career – Aretha could sing anything and make it indelibly hers. 

The composition has been remixed many times over. Today’s two-song playlist features a 2018 remix of Aretha’s version, Struggle, by Berlin DJ Tinush. That’s followed by Aretha’s dance floor hit. 

Struggle is spare for a remix with its quietly rhythmic piano line, subtle, staccato guitar licks, open spaces and ever so light touches of swelling strings. These frame a tasty background for the song’s strong pulse, Franklin’s vocals and the gospel choruses. This is easily one of my favourite songs of the last year. 

I think both of these songs just might get you sliding across the kitchen floor!
