SONG OF THE DAY
Oscar-nominated Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo
STAND UP (from Harriet) BY CYNTHIA ERIVO
British actress, singer and songwriter Cynthia Erivo is nominated in two categories at tonight’s 92nd Academy Awards: best actress and best song for her work in the biographical film Harriet in which she plays the role of black abolitionist and activist Harriet Tubman.
Erivo is the lead singer on Stand Up which she co-wrote with Joshuah Campbell.
The 2020 awards once again face criticism for the dearth of Black people nominated in major categories. Born to Nigerian parents in South London, Erivo is the only person of colour to be nominated in an acting category.
Erivo’s Wikipedia entry notes she is known for her performance as Celie in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple, for which she won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program – the latter two she shared with the rest of the cast.
Stay tuned,
